Monty Barker Ragan

Monty Barker Ragan, 76, of McLeansboro, IL, passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at the Hamilton Memorial Rehabilitation and Health Care Center.  He was born March 26, 1943, in Salem, Missouri to James Jefferson and Olive (Barker) Ragan.  He married Rebecca Ann Smithpeters on January 31, 1964 and she survives.  He was a Christian by faith.

Monty was a grain and livestock farmer and then owner/operator of Monty Ragan Oilfield Tank Truck Service for many years.  However, he was most proud of his success as a thoroughbred racehorse owner and trainer throughout the 80’s and 90’s.  He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, long-time member of McLeansboro Eagles Lodge #2699 and McLeansboro BPOE Lodge #1882.

In addition to Becky, he is survived by his daughter, Tamara Jean Thomas of Mesa, AZ; son, Clint (Carrie) Ragan of McLeansboro, IL; grandchildren: Leah Ragan and Braxton Ragan, both of McLeansboro. IL; brother, Randall (Diana) Ragan; sisters, Donna (Raymond “Ed") Betts and Rosemary Payne; sister-in-laws, Sandra Ragan and Joy Welch, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, special neighbors and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Irvin and Bill Ragan and brother-in-law, Phillip Payne.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at New Life Assembly of God Church in McLeansboro with Revs. Andy May, Eric Ragan and Robert Sefried officiating.  Visitation will be Saturday, May 11, from 10:00 a.m until the time of service at 1 p.m. at the New Life Assembly of God Church.  Burial will follow at Barker Cemetery near Walpole, IL.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hamilton Memorial Nursing Center activity fund and will be accepted at the church.
