James Curtis Obituary

James Albert Curtis, 66, of Shawneetown, IL, formerly of Broughton, IL, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025 at his home with his wife Evelyn and his companion dog Poppy Joe by his side.

He was born May 1, 1959 in Eldorado to K.C. and Mary Curtis.  On June 12, 2022 he married Evelyn Curtis who survives.

James had worked as a truck driver for approximately 25 years, having recently retired.  He was a 20 year attendee of the Grace Awakening Church in Benton, IL and a member of Turning Point Church of God in McLeansboro, IL, and The Remnant House of Prayer.  He served his country in the Army National Guard.  He was also a Freemason.  James loved Jesus, and he served the Lord as an evangelist.  He loved flowers, gardening, and attending live wrestling events with his wife Evelyn.

James is survived by his wife, Evelyn Curtis, son Kasie Jade Curtis & wife Nikki of Buckner, IL; son James Steven Curtis & significant other Elizabeth Street of Eldorado, IL; daughter Brittney Donovan & husband Shawn of McLeansboro, IL; son Kyle Strole & wife Ashley of McLeansboro, IL; and “bonus son” Wes Dockery of McLeansboro, IL; 15 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents K.C. & Mary Curtis, and grandparents Troy & Zeida Curtis.

Funeral services for James Albert Curtis will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at Turning Point Church of God in McLeansboro with Pastor Hope Owen officiating with visitation hours from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service at 3:00 p.m.  Evening visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 5 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.  Interment will follow the funeral service on Sunday at the Veterans section of I.O.O.F. "Oddfellows" Cemetery in McLeansboro, IL with graveside military honors provided by the McLeansboro American Legion Post #106 and the Decatur Military Funeral Honors Team.
