Mary Lou Stanton, 89, of Broughton, IL passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at Deaconess Illinois Medical Center in Marion, IL. Mary was born on January 16, 1935 in Fredonia, KY to Russell & Rachel Cummings. She married her first husband John Ross Pruitt, who preceded her in death. She later married her second husband Billy Dean Stanton, who also preceded her in death.
Mary had worked as an Aide and a Security Guard at St. Paul’s Senior Community in Belleville, IL. She was a member of the Broughton Baptist Church in Broughton, IL until the church’s closing. She later became a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Norris City, IL.
Her favorite activity was playing Bingo. She also enjoyed painting, reading, and spending time with family & friends.
Mary is survived by her children Pauline Pruitt, Peggy Pruitt, Ernie Stanton, and Kathleen Howland; a daughter-in-law Carolyn Pruitt; 3 brothers: Jerry Cummings, Russell (Diane) Cummings, and Michael (Jeannie) Cummings; 2 sisters: Carol Shepard and Betty Henry; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents Russell & Rachel Cummings, a son John Pruitt, a daughter Patsy VanEpps, an infant sister Bonnie Cummings, sisters: Myrtle Sigler, Velda Iverson, and Mickey Cummings; and brothers: Tommy Cummings and Johnny Ray Cummings.
Funeral services for Mary Lou Stanton will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2024 at Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with Rev. David Angelly officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow the funeral service at Gholson Cemetery south of Broughton, IL.
