Robert Lee Thompson, 77, of McLeansboro, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025 at 11:21 a.m. at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia. He was born on December 18, 1947 to Millage & Edith Thompson of McLeansboro.
Robert served his county in the United States Army. He served 16 years as an Army Medic. He spent 1 year in Vietnam, 3 years in Thailand, and 19 months in Alaska. He received the Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Cross of Gallantry with Palm Vietnam Medal, Service Ribbon Overseas, and many others.
He is survived by his son Robert F. Thompson, two daughters Sandee Brown and Serena (Ian) Pearson, step-son Joshua Campbell, seven grandkids Kathryn Bowles, Rebecca Wagner, Stephen Wagner, Colleen Pearson, Maggie Pearson, and Lillian Pearson, and sisters Teresa Brown and Vera Smith. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James Thompson, Rex Thompson, and Larry Thompson, and sister Verla Richardson.
In accordance with Robert’s wishes his body will be cremated, and his family will hold a private burial of ashes at Hopewell Cemetery in McLeansboro at a later date. Gholson Funeral Home of McLeansboro is assisting the family with arrangements.
