George Darr Duncan , 93, of Belle Rive, Illinois, passed away at 10:10 A.M. on Thursday, November 10, 2016, at home.  George was born at home in a log cabin on December 19, 1922, to Gordon and Bessie (Learned) Duncan at Sunnyside in rural Hamilton County near Dahlgren, Illinois.  He married Iris Herdibu Scrivner on November 6, 1954 at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church.  She survives him.  They recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 14, 2016, at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverends Jeremy Hamson and Richard McCormick officiating.  Interment will follow at Opdyke Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at the Belle Rive Missionary Baptist Church where George was a member.  He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge, and the Jefferson County Farm Bureau.

George attended Dahlgren High School, playing basketball and graduating in 1940.  He worked nights in the oil field.  He was in the U.S. Army during World War II and spent 30 months with the New Guinea Luzon Campaigns in the Philippines as an MP with the 784th Military Battalion Company B from 1942 to 1946.  He guarded General MacArthur and was awarded 2 Bronze Service Stars for his service.  After the war he returned home and worked in the oil field.  He kept in touch with his MP buddies over the past 72 years, attending annual reunions.  He went to Washington D.C. in September of 2012 with the Honor Flight to see the World War II Memorial.

George worked for Brehm Oil for 37 years, spending 19 of those years in Wyoming.  He worked 2 winters in Canada with American Stratagraphic.  He moved back to Illinois in 1978 and retired from Brehm Oil in 1987.

George is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, all of which loved listening to George share his many lifetime memories and war stories.  George loved horse races and pulls and was an avid fan of Ram basketball and Rend Lake baseball for as long as he was able to attend.  He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with his FS buddies in the afternoons.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers H. L. Duncan and Oren Duncan, and sisters Vivian Cross, Rachel Duncan, and Leticia McNeal, as well as great nephew Tim W. Gowler who was very close to his Uncle George.

A special thanks to the great nephew-in-laws that have helped and taken George to the many places he liked to visit.
