We loved our Uncle George so much. My sister, brothers and I have so many wonderful memories as we visited our Illinois relatives every August for two weeks. Our Dad, Walter, worked at General Electric in Holland, MI and they had a plant shut down every summer for two weeks. Since Mom (Letitia) and Dad raised us four kids on one income, the only vacation we could afford was to go see relatives. And we loved it!! Uncle George and Aunt Iris were often there from Wyoming. We kids would be sleeping on the floor of Grandma's "front room" in sleeping bags, listening to our aunts, uncles and parents in the next room. They would sometimes go outside for a smoke or circle a table to play cards but the very best part was all the stories!! Some nights, we all sat in lawn chairs outside, usually at Aunt Hezzie and Uncle Adron's house. Mom said the things flying over our heads were birds...had we known they were bats, it might have been a different picture. Catching fire flies, running with the dogs and oh, the singing!! Often Mom, Aunt Hezzie or Aunt Rachel played piano and all the family sang, Uncle Adron on the fiddle, Grandma or Mom on the accordion....what a lot of noise and so much fun! We often gathered for a meal at Uncle Dunk's house (H.L. and Nana), oh we loved to ride the horses and taste that delicious home-made ice cream! Grandma passed away in June 1978 and Uncle Oren shortly after. When Uncle George and Aunt Iris returned to Illinois, we started to visit during other parts of the year, usually with a family dinner at Wilkie's required. We will miss you so much, Uncle George. Our prayers are with you, dear Aunt Iris. Wish I could hear that deep voice one more time on my telephone...as we ended our time, I'd say "love you" and he'd respond "God bless you Suzie"

Maybe all young boys look up to their uncles as larger than life. All my mom's (Letitia) brothers were bona fide heroes to me not only growing up but as an adult. I remember looking forward to every upcoming trip that the McNeal clan would take to visit Illinois and, without fail, Uncle George and Aunt Iris would always make the trek from Wyoming to be there during our visit. I can’t count the horse and tractor pulls that Uncle George took me to. And then to my first dirt race where he let me sit where I wanted until the fast cars came out and I ended up with a mouthful of dirt. Special memories with a very special man that I’ll always cherish. I’m very honored that he allowed me to share his name.

Will miss seeing George at the F.S. in Belle Rive and playing a game or two of pinochle with him. I enjoyed hearing about Dahlgren and all the characters that lived here in the old days from George. Our loss is Heavens gain. God Bless !
