John W. "Jay" Edwards

John W. “Jay” Edwards, 95, formerly of McLeansboro, IL, passed away Monday, November 20, 2017 at his residence in Orlando, FL.  

He was born in Gallatin County, IL on August 11, 1922 to Alonzo “Lon” and Mary Edith (Henson) Edwards.  He married Helen V. Stauffer on December 14, 1941 and she preceded him in death.  John was also a distinguished United States Army Veteran having served during WWII where he fought in the New Guinea Campaign and the Battle of Luzon.  For his actions during these battles he was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star.  He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW Posts. 

John is survived by one son, Marion W. “Bill” (Margaret “Peggy”) Edwards of Orlando, FL; one daughter, Carmen Edwards of Englewood, FL; and two grandchildren, Bill Edwards and Teresa French.  Three great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with the Rev. Robert Sefried officiating.  He will be laid to rest at the IOOF Cemetery in McLeansboro with graveside military rites performed by American Legion Post #106.  Visitation will be held Sunday, November 26, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.  Memorial donations may be made to the donors choice and will be accepted at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
